Melbourne string quartet The Crossing Machine (violinists Marianne Rothschild and Matthew Rigby, violist Margaret Butcher and cellist Charlotte Jacke) were joined by vocalist Jordan Z to perform The Juliet Letters<\/em>, the genre-defying song cycle created by Elvis Costello in collaboration with The Brodsky Quartet. Originally released in 1993, The Juliet Letters<\/em> is a sequence of letters written to Shakespeare\u2019s Juliet, revealing a gallery of fractured lives, longing, regret, and dark wit. Since beginning this project in 2018, The Crossing Machine has been breathing new life into the work, approaching it with deep respect for the score while bringing a distinctly contemporary energy and emotional clarity.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

The Twilight Harmony concert on 6th November 2025<\/strong>, featured classical works by Australian and Ukrainian classical composers. The concert included\u00a0 two premieres of Australian works, including Stuart Greenbaum\u2019s new string quartet \u201cMidnight\u201d, in reference to a Ukrainian folk song. Original works by Michael Nurse (piano trio) and Jonathan Xian (piano) were also be performed. The event raised funds for Harmony Bridge: Ukraine-Australia, a not-for-profit charity dedicated to promoting Ukrainian arts in Australia.<\/p>\r\n

\"The In 1993, Elvis Costello stunned critics and audiences alike with his gorgeous and ambitious album and song cycle, The Juliet Letters, recorded with The Brodsky Quartet. Against all predictions, the live-recorded classically leaning album, comprised of imaginary letters to Juliet Capulet climbed the charts worldwide. Elvis Costello described\u00a0The Juliet Letters<\/i><\/em>\u00a0as \u201ca song sequence for string quartet and voice and it has a title. It\u2019s a little bit different. In December 2024, The Crossing Machine toured to NSW to present The Juliet Letters<\/em> at the Riverside Theatre, Parramatta.<\/p>\r\n

The Crossing Machine played The Juliet Letters<\/i><\/em> on 15th & 16th February at the 2020 Adelaide Fringe Festival. Three amazing musicians joined us:<\/p>\r\n

Kat Stevens<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0on violin (originally from Adelaide, now in Melbourne) Jason Thomas<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0on viola from Adelaide and a member of The Zephyr Quartet who have kindly lent him to us for 2 afternoons in February. Janet Butler<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0on cello from Melbourne who was a member of the Bournemouth Symphony.<\/p>\r\n

On 25 \u2013 27th September 2019, The Crossing Machine played The Juliet Letters<\/i><\/em>\u00a0with Asher Reichman at the\u00a0Melbourne Fringe Festival<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0at The Melba, Sawtooth Studio, 35 Johnston Street Collingwood.<\/p>\r\n
