The Juliet Letters by Elvis Costello

In 1993, Elvis Costello stunned critics and audiences alike with his gorgeous and ambitious album and song cycle, The Juliet Letters, recorded with The Brodsky Quartet. Against all predictions, the live-recorded classically leaning album, comprised of imaginary letters to Juliet Capulet climbed the charts worldwide.

Elvis Costello described The Juliet Letters as “a song sequence for string quartet and voice and it has a title. It’s a little bit different. It’s not a rock opera. It’s a new thing.”

“In The Juliet Letters, Elvis Costello has crafted a series of dramatic ballads in which passages written by male and female characters of varying ages and degrees of sanity tell stories of love, betrayal and death. Shakespeare’s most famous tragic heroine serves as a metaphor for the disillusionment they all experience in some way.”

The Juliet Letters in 2024

In December 2024, The Crossing Machine toured to NSW to present The Juliet Letters at the Riverside Theatre, Parramatta.

“After touring eight seasons of The Juliet Letters by Elvis Costello and The Brodsky Quartet, The Crossing Machine are excited to come to Parramatta and present highlights from The Juliet Letters, with a strong reference to Parramatta in one of the songs, Fleetwood Mac, and the timeless beauty ‘Right Here Waiting For You’ by Richard Marx.”
